For the Sake of the Nation: Horror Films Forbidden by the Estado Novo Regime

The 18th edition features the cycle "A Bem da Nação - Filmes de Terror Proibidos pelo Estado Novo" (For the Good of the Nation - Horror Films Banned by the Estado Novo), with the screening of five films banned by the censorship. One genre that “caused a lot of problems" between distributors and censors was, of course, horror. During this 30-year period of dictatorship (1944 - 1974), only 23 horror films premiered in Portuguese cinemas, 16 were completely banned and only one premiered uncut. This programme is part of the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of April 25th.
