On Tammaru Farm, three teenagers are growing up: Margus and two orphans, Mari and Tiina. Tiina is impulsive and full of energy, qualities that win Margus’s heart. However, his parents would prefer him to marry Mari, who is considered the most suitable match, as Tiina is viewed with suspicion because her mother was executed for alleged witchcraft. Consumed by jealousy, Mari becomes convinced that Tiina has bewitched Margus and publicly accuses her of being a werewolf. Based on the play by August Kitzberg, this drama explores prejudice, superstition and social tensions in a rural community marked by fear and intolerance. A sublime Estonian folk horror film and the only film in this section written and directed by a woman, Leida Laius. Poetic and dreamlike, much like Charles Laughton’s “Night of the Hunter”.
