Um S Marginal

A film by José de Sá Caetano

Portugal, 1983, 93'

In the near future, the Portuguese coast is set to host a vast network of ocean and solar power stations that are destabilising the country’s ecosystem. Upon receiving the news of his sister’s death in a car accident, Jorge sets off in search of his father to tell him of the tragedy. However, he discovers that his father has retreated to an isolated house, kept secret as a refuge and a place of rest in the face of a rapidly changing world. One of Sá Caetano’s most remarkable works – and perhaps his best known – due to the rare foray into science fiction in Portugal. Blending elements of documentary, thriller and futuristic speculation, the film tackles climate change with an impressive foresight. Also noteworthy is the presence, in the cast, of the future director Joaquim Leitão.
