Structured around seven episodes, each corresponding to one of the days of the week, this anthology forces us to witness different stories of suicide, linked only by the recurring image of a corpse – the film’s silent narrator – which slowly decomposes as time passes. Formally more ambitious than “Nekromantik”, yet equally unsettling, it is a meditation on the human condition so bleak and desolate that death becomes trivial in comparison to the characters’ loneliness, despair and pain. Buttgereit’s avant-garde approach is more terrifying than the typical ghosts, monsters, psychopaths or jump scares, because it portrays the violence and terror of everyday life, where there are no villains, only victims – of the world and of themselves.
