When it comes to crime, Belgrade is much like any other modern metropolis — except that it doesn’t have a serial killer. That shortcoming is addressed when a flower seller begins strangling women. At the same time, a famous, emotionally unstable rock star establishes a mysterious telepathic link with the killer. Directed by Slobodan Šijan, one of Serbia’s most renowned filmmakers, the film caused controversy upon its release due to the irreverent way in which it blends horror, social satire and black comedy. Beneath the guise of a film about serial killers lies a unique work, brimming with energy, eccentricity and sharp commentary on pop culture, in which the capital city itself takes on the role of a character. A minor classic of Yugoslav cinema that subverts the genre’s clichés with delightfully macabre humour.
