One of the most controversial films in German horror cinema, Jörg Buttgereit’s “Nekromantik,” transforms one of humanity’s greatest taboos into a disturbing reflection on death, obsession, and alienation. Robert works for a crime scene cleanup company, collecting traces of violence and corpses on a daily basis. His connection to death extends into his personal life, as he shares with his girlfriend, Betty, a morbid fascination with decomposing bodies. Without mercy or compassion, the viewer is confronted with necrophilia through deliberately shocking images and a raw aesthetic, where the grotesque coexists with melancholy, loneliness, marginalization, and physical, moral, and emotional decay.
