When Ferat Motors launches a new high-performance sports car, a doctor specialising in traumatology begins to investigate a disturbing theory: the vehicle may be a biological machine fuelled by human blood. Directed by Juraj Herz, a key figure of the Czech New Wave and director of “The Cremator” and “Morgiana”, this film combines political paranoia, science fiction, cultural provocation and a unique take on the vampire myth, whilst also offering a scathing critique of society in socialist Czechoslovakia, where imported cars were a privilege reserved for the elite. Starring fellow director Jiří Menzel, former First Lady Dagmar Havlová and the legendary Škoda 110 Super Sport, it has become an unusual classic, also marked by the censorship that destroyed part of the original footage.
