Azul, Azul

A film by José de Sá Caetano

Portugal, 1984, 97'

Alentejo, 1980s. Luísa, who is still young, runs a rural estate inherited from her family on her own. She has the support of her brother Alexandre, her sister, and her brother-in-law, but keeping the farm afloat is becoming increasingly difficult. While her brother-in-law advocates turning the estate into a luxury holiday home, Luísa resists the pressure to modernize. Meanwhile, Miguel, a young farmhand, falls in love with the owner — whom everyone calls “the lady” — in a relationship marked by class differences and the weight of tradition. An adaptation of “Miguel” by João de Araújo Correia, this is the least known film in the trilogy, as it never had a commercial release, and it engages with the previous films through multiple references: the families on vacation evoke the first film, while news reports about the environmental crisis, heard on the radio, echo the concerns of “Um S Marginal.”
