As Ruínas no Interior

A film by José de Sá Caetano

Portugal, 1976, 107'

1943. While Europe is ravaged by World War II, an upper-class family takes refuge in an old vacation home near a fishing village on the Portuguese coast. The days pass in apparent quiet until, one foggy morning, two survivors of a plane crash appear on the beach: the pilot and the gunner of a British fighter plane shot down at sea. Their arrival disrupts the family's routine and brings the war into a place that seemed sheltered from history. In addition to being one of the few Portuguese films to address World War II, it was approved by the Portuguese Film Institute at a time when there were almost no works centered on the world of children since “Aniki-Bobó.” Inspired by Sá Caetano’s childhood memories and by collective imaginaries such as the Sebastianist myth, it combines historical evocation and fantasy. For Luís de Pina, it is a “cinematographically pure” work.
