Do you remember that – or those (if you were the scaredy-cat of the group, no judgement here) – horror film you watched as a child that kept you awake for days on end? Since you only get to celebrate 20 years of MOTELX once in a lifetime, and the party has to keep going strong from morning till night, this year we're bringing you a Monster Day to keep you on your toes: a day dedicated to celebrating our beloved, iconic monsters. Better than a coffee, nothing like an encounter with your most feared villain – be it Freddy Krueger, Michael Myers, Chucky, a troll, or the witch from "Snow White" – to wake you up (and possibly even cure you of some trauma).
And why an encounter with so many monsters? Because the highlight of Monster Day, on 5th September at Cinema São Jorge, will be our Monster Contest, an initiative that aims to recognise and reward with €500 the best monster costume, valuing creativity, artistic and technical quality of execution, and how well it fits within the horror universe. Original creatures and characters inspired by films, series, anime, video games, books or manga will be accepted, as well as the usual suspects (vampires, zombies, demons, and everything in between). Each contestant will have one minute to strut their stuff and shine in front of a jury, who will choose the overall winner. Afterwards, we'll all head to the MOTELX Lounge to dance and raise a toast in the company of dozens of monsters. Can you imagine a better way to end a Saturday in Lisbon?
And because little ones deserve a slightly softer introduction to monsters, the Big Bad Wolf will also have his own way of celebrating Monster Day with a workshop for children aged 0 to 5, run by Atelier Sensorial ALMA, where they'll create their very own "kindness monster", in a fun and creative experience designed for the whole family.
