Lost Room

One of the central figures in ancient Portuguese religion is the witch — a symbol of the independent, rebellious woman, often in opposition to men and guardian of feminine knowledge. According to sociologist Moisés Espírito Santo, witchcraft cults persisted in Portugal, with their distinctly Marian religious roots, until the mid-20th century, losing strength with the literacy of the population and the advent of electricity in rural areas.
But how were these witches portrayed in Portuguese horror films?
In our Lost Room, in 2025, we answer that question by celebrating ‘The Witches' Ball’. Because we may not believe in them, but they do exist!
