Walpurgis' Night

A film by Noémia Delgado

Portugal, 1983, 60'

In this episode of “Contos Fantásticos Portugueses”, broadcast by RTP in 1983, the protagonist-narrator recounts a story he once heard from an elderly peasant woman from Beira, whom he encounters during a walk in the mountains. The woman, in turn, shares a tale passed down from her grandmother: while walking along similar paths, she claimed to have witnessed a diabolical scene — a witches’ sabbath, including some familiar faces, worshipping a figure she identified as the Devil himself. “The Walpurgis Night” is a fantastic tale by Hugo Rocha, openly inspired by Goethe’s “Faust”, included in “Histórias Fantasmagóricas” and later in “Antologia do Conto Português Fantástico”, from which director Noémia Delgado drew inspiration for this series of television films.
