He started studying Biology to become an ornithologist, but dropped out to study Cinema at the ESTC instead, graduating in 1992. His international career began with the short film “Congratulations!”, which won the Silver
Lion in Venice. He wrote and directed five feature films, his first work being “The Phantom” - that also premiered
in Venice and caused controversy in Italy when the official Vatican newspaper asked for the festival director’s
resignation for having programmed the film - and his most recent one “The Ornithologist”, which won him the
Silver Leopard for Best Director at the 69th Locarno International Film Festival, in 2016.
