Lobotomy, My Love: 70th anniversary of the death of Egas Moniz | Talk

Egas Moniz received the Nobel Prize in Medicine for an achievement that ultimately slipped from his hands, and which cinema exploited at its most sadistic whim. But in 1949, lobotomy announced advances in neuroscience, despite the terrible eugenic, ideological, and prejudiced practices that had long been carried out. On the 70th anniversary of the death of the doctor who founded the Júlio de Matos Hospital, meant to be an alternative to Miguel Bombarda, we gather in the very place where those suffering from mental illness were once cast aside without dignity, to debate a theme as contemporary as it is urgent: mental health. And how cinema and medicine have, over time, been partners, accomplices, educators, and viscerally responsible for an idea of guilt. With Ana Neves (Clinical Psychologist), Edgar Pêra (Director).
