"Lost Room Film Laboratory": MOTELX returns at NOVA FCSH

MOTELX and NOVA FCSH team up again for the "Lost Room Film Laboratory", a filmmaking workshop to produce a short horror film in 3 days.
MOTELX and NOVA FCSH announce the second edition of their 72 Hour Film Project, now rebranded as the Lost Room Film Laboratory. This intensive filmmaking workshop challenges students from this Faculty, our long-standing and valued academic partner, to write, shoot, and edit the first version of a horror short film in just 3 days (July 2nd, 3rd, and 4th). This year, the project also includes an additional theoretical component focused on the theme of Portuguese Horror Cinema, which takes place on July 1st.

The Lost Room Film Laboratory consists in a proposal of an exercise of directing a film featured in the book "The Lost Room of MOTELX – Portuguese Horror Films (1911–2006)". The project is supervised by Pedro Florêncio, professor in the Department of Communication Sciences at NOVA FCSH, and director and also a frequent creative collaborator, Fernando Alle, and it is open to NOVA FCSH students from any level of study. Applications are open until June 29 by filling  this form.

A new feature of this edition is a public lecture on the History of Portuguese Horror Cinema, open to the wider community, held on July 1st at 2:00 PM in Auditorium B3. This "history" will follow a reverse chronological approach, starting with contemporary filmmakers such as Tiago Guedes and Raquel Freire, and ending with the silent film era. It will also explore some filmmakers and horror movies produced during the New State period that remained forgotten for years.

This year, the Lost Room Film Laboratory will focus on the film "The Dance of Paroxysms" (1930) by Jorge Brum do Canto, a silent medium-length film that will also be the central case study of the theoretical session on the History of Portuguese Horror Cinema. The full film is available on YouTube and can be viewed here.

Filming will take place on the Avenida de Berna campus, and editing will be carried out in the LabCC editing studio, located on the 5th floor of Tower B, ensuring that all stages of production are developed within NOVA FCSH.

The resulting short film will be screened at the upcoming 19th Edition of MOTELX - from September 9 to 15, 2025.
