Horror in Portugal: Between the Niche and Literature

Three authors, three books, one conversation. “O Sono dos Culpados” by Fábio Ventura is a breathtaking psychological thriller that explores the limits of trust, the weight of guilt, and what happens when the darkness within us is confronted by an inescapable terror. “Coisas Ruins” by Pedro Zamith is a story of trauma, faith, and redemption, weaving folk horror with religious mysticism in a familiar Portuguese setting, draw ing on beings still very present in Portuguese popular beliefs, whose manifestations terrify both believers and skeptics alike. And finally, Aquilo que o Sono Esconde by Mafalda Santos, winner of the 2024 ATAEGINA Prize for Published Book with “Enquanto o Fim não Vem”.
