. 3 years of MOTELx! (12.09.2009)
The surprise screening of the full version (13') of the historical video Thriller, directed in 1983 by John Landis for Michael Jackson, marked the beginning of the 3rd edition of MOTELx - Lisbon International Horror Film Festival.
During 5 days, 9,000 people filled the seats of Cinema São Jorge, in Lisbon, in this 3rd Edition, which paid homage to Michael Jackson, but also to two important local figures, who passed away this year, for their contribution for film culture: Vasco Granja and João Bénard da Costa.
The program was comprised of 35 screenings with some of the best horror films produced in 15 different countries - a total of 62 films, considering feature and short films. There were 25 Portuguese premières and the world première of Viva la Muerte! Autopsie du Nouveau Cinéma Fantastique Espagnol (France, 2009), directed by Yves Montmayeur.
Several directors, producers and actors were invited by the festival to introduce and discuss their films with the local audiences: Stuart Gordon (the name chosen for the tribute-section Cult of the Living Masters), John Landis (special screening of the remastered copy of An American Werewolf in London), Yves Montmayeur (Viva la Muerte!), David Howard and Rik Hall (Flick), Jeffrey Coghlan (Pontypool), Marcel Sarmiento and Gadi Harel (Deadgirl), Pieter Van Hees and Eline Kuppens ("Linkeroever").
This year Portuguese cinema also deserved a special attention. In the new section Lost Room, Legendary Tiger Man and Rita Redshoes composed an original soundtrack for the film A Dança dos Paroxismos (1929), by Jorge Brum do Canto, which they played live for a sold out theatre.
The short film Sangue Frio, by Patrick Mendes, won the Prize MOTELx - Best Portuguese Horror Short Film, by unanimous decision of the jury comprised by directors António de Macedo, Tiago Guedes and Yves Montmayeur, who also decided to award a special mention to Papá Wrestling, by Fernando Alle.
The last day of the festival ended with the presentation of the "video-scares" produced during the workshop of the Big Bad Wolf section, which had the participation of youngsters aged 9 to 12. The video featured a memorable reinterpretation of Thriller.
