WARM-UP MOTELX 2023

MOTELX is once again marking its cultural return with unique initiatives around Lisbon before the Festival begins. Programme to be announced soon. From 7 to 9 September.
Open Air Cinema - Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds - 60th Anniversary

7 SEP (Thursday) | 21h30
Campo das Cebolas Garden
Free entry

No other film matches "The Birds" (USA, 1963, 120') for sheer terror, as Hitchcock unleashes his nasty friends in one of his most shocking and memorable masterpieces. When Melanie Daniels arrives in Bodega Bay in pursuit of eligible bachelor Mitch Brenner, she is inexplicably attacked by a seagull. Suddenly thousands of birds flock to the town, attacking children and residents at random. Mitch and Melanie soon realise that they are going to have to fight for their lives, against a deadly force that has no explanation and cannot be stopped, in one of the master of suspense's most memorable films where nature's revenge is devastating. Hitchcock's second foray into horror after "Psycho", and once again the British director changes the "rules of the game" in this film. The impact on the "golden generation" of American horror cinema was tremendous; without "The Birds", there would have been no "Night of the Living Dead", "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" or "The Fog". Celebration of the 60th anniversary of this pre-classic of the very current eco-horror.

A film essay on "The Exorcist", "Leap of Faith: William Friedkin on The Exorcist" explores the unknown depths of William Friedkin's mind, the nuances of his shooting process and the mysteries of faith and destiny that have shaped the director's life and filmography. After the documentaries "78/52" (2017), about the famous shower sequence in "Psycho", and "Memory: The Origins of Alien" (2019), both screened at MOTELX, acclaimed director Alexandre O. Philippe explores the universe of a film that is for many cinephiles the best and scariest horror film ever - "The Exorcist".
