The new film by Quentin Dupieux, “The Piano Accident”, arrives in Portuguese cinemas on 30 April, with premieres in Lisbon, Vila Nova de Gaia, Coimbra and Funchal. Distribution in Portugal is handled by MOTELX.
Known for his singular style, which blends the absurd with social commentary, Dupieux presents what may be his darkest and most reality-adjacent work to date. The film offers a sharp satire of the contemporary digital landscape, exploring the culture of exposure, sensationalism, and the limits of fame on social media.
At the centre of the narrative is Magalie, played by Adèle Exarchopoulos, a successful influencer who suffers from Congenital Insensitivity to Pain (CIP) and builds her popularity through extreme content. While filming yet another video, she is involved in a violent accident that forces her to retreat to the mountains, accompanied by her assistant. The apparent isolation quickly gives way to a tense environment, marked by the presence of an obsessive fan and the threat of a journalist holding information capable of destroying her career.
Recognised for intense roles in films such as Blue Is the Warmest Colour, Exarchopoulos appears here in an unexpected register, exploring absurd comedy without losing the unsettling dimension of the character. This marks her second collaboration with Dupieux, following Mandibles.
Without abandoning his distinctive humour, the French director moves towards a darker, more observational tone, reflecting on a world where visibility has become currency and where the boundary between the real and the performative is increasingly blurred.
"The Piano Accident” premieres on 30 April at UCI El Corte Inglés (Lisbon), Fernando Lopes (Lisbon), Turim (Lisbon), UCI Arrábida 20 (Vila Nova de Gaia), Casa do Cinema de Coimbra, and Screenings Funchal (Madeira).
