In the year that MOTELX celebrates two decades dedicated to horror cinema, the Festival returns to its roots with the launch of "Sessões Nimas Fora de Horas" (Nimas After Hours), a new initiative dedicated to genre cinema.
The project revives the spirit of the horror screenings that marked the Festival’s genesis: in 2003, even before its official foundation, the CTLX – Lisbon Horror Film Club held an experimental midnight screening at the former Cinema King Triplex, planting the seed for what is now MOTELX – Lisbon International Horror Film Festival.
Two decades later, the ritual returns with monthly screenings dedicated to cult cinema, horror, and its many contemporary variations. The programming is a partnership between MOTELX and the streaming platform FilmTwist – dedicated exclusively to fantasy and horror cinema – and takes place at Cinema Nimas in Lisbon.
The opening screening takes place on Friday, 27 March, at midnight. The chosen film is "Exit 8" (Japan, 2025), by director Genki Kawamura, a work presented at the latest Cannes Film Festival.
Please note: This film will be screened in the original Japanese language with Portuguese subtitles only.
Exit 8
Adapted from a popular indie video game, "Exit 8" is a hypnotic cinematic experience focused on repetition and paranoia. The narrative follows a man trapped in a seemingly infinite underground corridor, where the only way to escape is through the rigorous observation of anomalies until reaching "Exit 8". More than just a survival film, it is a work that challenges the audience’s perception, placing them in an active and unsettling role.
With the Nimas After Hours screenings, MOTELX recovers the tradition of late-night horror and creates a new regular meeting point for fans of the genre, extending the Festival’s spirit beyond its usual September dates.
