MOTELX 2016 - 10 years of Horror

Sex, Prophecies and cannibalism celebrate 10 years of MOTELX
To commemorate a decade of horror cinema in Lisbon, MOTELX - Lisbon International Horror Film Festival, welcomes Italian director Ruggero Deodato, director of the classic “Cannibal Holocaust” as a special guest.
In the year that sees the Festival launching a feature film competition, MOTELX is once again back to Tivoli BBVA theatre, and together with Cinema São Jorge and Cinemateca Júnior, completes the triangle of venues that will bring more than 70 horror screenings to Avenida da Liberdade. The Festival runs from September 6-11 and is preceded by the now customary Warm-Up week, September 1-3.

MOTELX - Lisbon International Horror Film Festival is back to the capital, from September 6-11, to celebrate its tenth edition. This year we highlight the european feature film competition, special screenings dedicated to Polish director Walerian Borowczyk, where sex and erotica meet horror, and the presence of Italian director Ruggero Deodato, author of one of the most shocking films in the history of cinema, “Cannibal Holocaust” (1980).

To underline MOTELX’s constant search for innovation, a long awaited return: Dom Sebastião, in a more necromantic form, will return from the dead and appear at the Festival which celebrates its tenth anniversary this year. The Best Portuguese Horror Short award continues to be the highest monetary prize in Portugal, five thousand euros.

The winners of the Best Portuguese Short and Best European Feature will also win the Méliès d’Argent prize, becoming automatically nominated for the international competition Méliès d’Or, promoted annually by the European Fantastic Film Festivals Federation, of which MOTELX is the Portuguese representative.

For the programme we highlight indian film “Psycho Raman” and the vampire themed “The Transfiguration”, both premieres at the latest Cannes Festival; “De Palma”, a documentary about one of the most talented and iconoclastic filmmakers of all time, Brian de Palma, director of “Carrie” and “Phantom of the Paradise”; and the much awaited duel between two of the most famous Japanese ghosts, “Sadako vs Kayako”.

Another important return is YORN as the main sponsor, who also launches, alongside the Festival, the competition microSHORTS, dedicated to small doses of horror, with two minutes maximum duration, filmed entirely on a mobile, smartphone or tablet.

Among other announcements, Teatro Tivoli BBVA welcomes MOTELX once again, after a one year break, completing the triangle of horror cinema at Avenida da Liberdade, along with Cinema São Jorge and Cinemateca Júnior.

We also highlight the newest section MOTELX LAB, that offers several activities such as workshops, masterclasses, and conferences, aimed at both professionals and amateurs who want to inspire themselves with the creativity of horror cinema.

This year the Festival anticipates itself with Warm-Up activities the week prior (1-3 September), with outdoor cinema at Largo São Carlos and Beco da Rua da Moeda (Cais do Sodré), followed by concerts and parties and a mysterious tour with Lisbon Walker, inspired by the universe of Dom Sebastião I.

MOTELX keeps growing each year and in 2015 had over 18 thousand visitors. This year there will be over 70 screenings during the course of 6 days, an average of 12 per day.
