First Wave MOTELX 2026: First News for the 20th Edition
Meet the four films confirmed for MOTELX's 20th edition
MOTELX is delighted to announce the first news for the programme of its very special 20th edition, taking place from 3 to 13 September at Cinema São Jorge and Cinemateca Portuguesa — for the first time in the Festival's history, over the course of 11 days.
To mark the start of the celebrations of MOTELX's 20th anniversary, we are already revealing the Portuguese premieres of four films arriving with excellent reviews.
"
Fuck My Son" (USA) – Todd Rohal
Who says horror isn't something to laugh at? "Fuck My Son", which had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, is an adaptation of the macabre comic book by American artist Johnny Ryan. Following in the footsteps of John Waters and Lloyd Kaufman's Troma, Todd Rohal's film is an unfiltered horror comedy that makes bad taste its greatest weapon.
"Game" (UK) – John Minton
A claustrophobic nightmare drawing on 1990s rave culture, transplanted deep into the forest, with a distinctly British edge. "Game", by John Minton, stars John Williamson (known for his other life as frontman of Sleaford Mods) and is written and produced by Geoff Barrow, founder of Portishead.
"AnyMart" (Japan) – Yusuke Iwasaki
Featured at the Berlinale, "AnyMart", by Yusuke Iwasaki, invites us to take a look at the shelves of this convenience store. It is there that Sakai, the owner's son, has spent much of his life. But this place that once brought him comfort seems to be starting to crumble — in a rather sinister way.
"Species" (Belgium/France) – Marion Le Corroller
Margot is a young intern in a busy emergency room. The atmosphere is intense and demanding, and the patients' symptoms are anything but ordinary. Marion Le Corroller, one of the rising names of French feminist horror, makes her debut with a body horror film that premiered at the Cannes Film Festival's Midnight Screenings.
