Lisbon, 17 July 2018: MOTELX - Lisbon International Horror Film Festival returns to Cinema São Jorge, 4-9 September, in a provocative and bustling edition full of surprises (and secrets) to unveil. Lovers of horror can count on the most desired premiere: "The Nun" will be screened during opening night at MOTELX's 12th edition. The "The Conjuring" saga continues with a new story that challenges the protagonists' and spectators' faith.

MOTELX will also be the stage for the 200th anniversary celebration of the work "Frankenstein". Mary Shelley created one of the world's most celebrated figures of horror at a time when it was unthinkable for a woman to sign such a story. She was, therefore, silenced as the author of this essential work for a long time. And what about today? What voice do women within the arts and cinema domain have in particular? A bridge between the past and the future that serves as a motto for a debate with prominent women of the Portuguese cultural panorama.

The best horror films continue to be the jewel of the Festival's programme. "The Night Shifter" of Brazilian director Dennison Ramalho, making his first feature debut, brings the story of Stênio to Cinema São Jorge. The haunting experiences continue with the creations of Jeremy Dyson and Andy Nyman, "Ghost Stories", Pascal Laugier, "Ghostland", and the Argentine surprise "Terrified" by Demián Rugna.

Trump as the US leader looks like a horror scene but it is not the only current affair that inspires filmmakers all over the world. The Australian "Brothers' Nest" depicts the ruin of the family cell and the Danish "Cutterhead" questions the European project in this post-Brexit period.

The Lost Room section, which uncovers the best of Portuguese genre cinema, will be entirely dedicated to a filmmaker for the first time, Solveig Nordlund. The Swedish director, who has worked for major national filmmakers, stood out for her Portuguese adaptation of J.G. Ballard's "Low-Flying Aircraft", which will screen at MOTELX along with the psychological thriller "My Baby".

Children are also invited to serenely and pedagogically reflect on their fears during the Big Bad Wolf sessions, that, given the success of previous editions, will expand to two weekends.

In keeping with its stance encouraging the production of horror films in Portugal, the Festival will award the best Portuguese horror short film with €5,000, the highest money prize of its kind in the country. The winner of this Award will also be nominated for the Méliès d'Or international competition awarded annually by the European Federation of Fantastic Film Festivals. To this, the winner will also be able to enjoy a weekend at Belver Hotels and €5,000 in post-production services at Kino Sound Studio.

The best European feature film will also be revealed during the Festival. Yorn, MOTELX's partner in crime, will continue to challenge the audience to present micro-shorts filmed with smartphones and tablets.

Another highlight of this edition is the presentation of an anthology with a selection of H.P. Lovecraft's tales by the publisher Saída de Emergência, the musician Legendary Tigerman and the director Edgar Pêra, who are preparing a 3D cine-concert, of which some clips will be revealed firsthand, along with an exhibit with the illustrations included in the book.

To anticipate the Festival, DriveNow, a car-sharing solution by Via Verde that is a premium partner for MOTELX 2018, will surprise the people of Lisbon with a Drive-In screening where it will be possible to live all your fears intensely inside a car.
