MOTELX and FilmTwist remain committed to bringing the best national horror cinema, especially in short format, to the homes of the bravest viewers, premiering new films every month.
We announce, in
May 2025, the premiere of a new Portuguese short film that competed for the MOTELX Award - Best Portuguese Horror Short Film, the biggest national monetary prize for short films, in 2021, and is also in competition for the Méliès D’argent - Best European Short Film, along with 11 other European short films, in this 15th edition of MOTELX.
The MOTELX + FilmTwist Film of the Month that we announce today is: "
A Fistful of Coins", by
Chico Noras - one of our "usual suspects" who would win the aforementioned MOTELX Award - Best Portuguese Horror Short in 2024, with "
The Procedure".
Synopsis:
Portugal, 2021. In the aftermath of the raging pandemic, a kind matriarch, Judite, walks with her grandson down a precarious suburban street, full of shops to be passed through. However, her hometown slump is suddenly interrupted by a promotion she simply can't refuse.
"A Fistful of Coins" is a scathing satire filmed during the pandemic lockdown, where capitalism and death intersect to the sound of laughter and blood spurts. Chico Noras transforms the scarcity of resources into a gesture of pure ingenuity, with the absurdity of promotions and consumption taken to the limit of the grotesque. Gore serves to make people laugh, but also to criticize — and it is no coincidence: for the director, death is the great artistic and cinematic object, inevitable and omnipresent, but almost always silenced.
Yet another strong reason to join MOTELX on FilmTwist, the only national streaming platform focused on cinema not suitable for the faint of heart.
