Valentine’s Day, 1945. Charles Walton, a 74-year-old farm labourer, is found dead in a field in the Cotswolds, England. The macabre circumstances in which his body is discovered give rise to various suspicions — among them, the possibility of involvement in a ritual or practice linked to witchcraft. The case, still unsolved to this day, became the chief inspiration for The Wicker Man and sowed the seed that would later grow into British folk horror. Through the lens of Rupert Russell, the murder is read as a metaphor for a deeper enigma: that of Britain itself. “Mysteries act like mirrors, reflecting our fears, anxieties, and cultural beliefs” — this is the point of departure for a singular journey through time, in which Satan invites us to dance between life and art, reality and fiction.
