In “The Gruesome Twosome”, before the arrival of the counterculture movement, young people indulge
in leisure activities in dorm rooms, car races, at the
beach, and in drive-ins. Some eventually fall victim
to a wig shop, where the owner and her son await
them to collect their scalps. Between graphic vio
lence and dark humor — Herschell Gordon Lewis’s
trademark recipe — the owner is portrayed as a kind
old lady, concerned with the growth of her business
and torn between the love for her son and for a por
celain cat.
