My Animal

My Animal

A film by Jacqueline Castel

Canada, 2023, 103'

Heather, a young ice hockey goalie rejected by her small town in northern Canada, falls in love with the new kid on the block Jonny, a tormented figure skater. As their relationship deepens, Heather's growing desires collide with her darkest family secret, forcing her to control the animal within. "My Animal" is a spiritual descendant of another Canadian lycanthrope classic, 2000's "Ginger Snaps". Both explore a classic horror theme and both have a female protagonist at the centre of the narrative. Premiered at Sundance's Midnights, it is the first feature film by Jacqueline Castel, director of Zola Jesus' music videos, with screenwriter Jae Matthews of the band Boy Harsher.
