Irati

Irati

A film by Paul Urkijo Alijo

Spain, 2022, 112'

It's with a Basque adventure epic ( which recalls the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy or the screened at MOTELX in 2021, "The Green Knight") that Paul Urkijo Alijo returns to our Festival - five years after his "Errementari" visited our stage. This time the director will be presenting "Irati", which premiered in Spain this year after being in the 55th Sitges Festival. Based on the history of the Basque Country during the process of Christian reconquering of the Iberian Peninsula from the Moors, the film follows Eneko, son of the Lord of the Valley (sacrificed in battle), who returns home as an adult to protect it from Velasco's annexation advances. When a lost treasure needs to be recovered, Eneko sets off towards a cave deep in the forest, guided by an enigmatic young woman. "Irati" is a visual potion with mythological, magical and expressionist properties, whose ingestion imprints on our memory beautiful images reminiscent of an ancient world and a love story.
