Hounds

Les Meutes

A film by Kamal Lazraq

Morocco, France, Belgium, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, 2023, 94'

Winner of the Jury Prize of the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival – where it premiered – “Hounds” is the first feature by directorKamal Lazraq and follows a father and son over the course of one night on the outskirts of Casablanca.Hassan is a middle-aged man who survives by doing“small” crimes for the city’s real gangsters, while his son, Issam, is a cautious young man. When Dib, a dog-fighting kingpin, asks Hassan (who, in turn, asks his son for help) to kidnap one of his rival’s men, things go wrong, and the two are forced to get rid of a body in a city where even wastelands cause territorial wars... Kamal Lazraq skillfully involves us in the tension of the duo’s odyssey, alluding to the brutal and precarious reality of the Moroccan capital’ speriphery in a constant (and almost comic) contrast with the weight of religion
