El Orfanato

El Orfanato

A film by Juan A. Bayona

Spain, Mexico, 2007, 105'

Laura returns to the orphanage where she grew up, with her son, Simón, and her husband, Carlos. Her intention, now that she has bought the property, is to restore it and turn it into a home for sick and disabled children. Although most of her childhood memories are happy, as the family settles into their new home, disturbing images and visions begin to creep into Laura's mind, and she gets the feeling that something terrible has happened to her former classmates... Simón is also deeply affected by the place - the boy sees the same figures of the past that haunt his mother. Telepathy? Or does something live with them? At its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in 2007, this film received a standing ovation that lasted more than 10 minutes. Directed by Bayona and with Guillermo del Toro as executive producer, "El Orfanato'' is one of the most successful films in the history of Spanish cinema - and horror cinema.
