Bury Your Dead

Enterre Seus Mortos

A film by Marco Dutra

Brazil, 2024, 128'

Straddling genres as diverse as Western and cosmic horror, the film follows a collector of dead animals on the roads, Edgar Wilson, and his fellow professional, Tomás — an excommunicated priest who administers holy anointing to the poor creatures they come across. When Edgar sees his lover join the enigmatic cult that haunts the small town of Abalurdes, he embarks on a roadtrip through the ruins of a civilization plagued by the anarchy of the end of times. Marco Dutra, best known for "Good Manners", returns to solo directing in a ghostly journey through a rural Brazil, ravaged by the imminent apocalypse. This is an adaptation of the book written by author Ana Paula Maia, the result of the director's pandemic isolation in early 2020 and, as he himself says, an ambitious example of "art as a way of surviving the darkest times". Selton Mello and Marjorie Estiano, two of the most popular Brazilian actors of the moment, shine as the protagonists.
