A Useful Ghost

A film by Ratchapoom Boonbunchachoke

Thailand, Singapore, Germany, France, 2025, 130'

March is grieving intensely after the loss of his wife, Nat, who died from a respiratory illness caused by the heavy dust pollution that has long compromised Thailand’s air. When her spirit returns, possessing the vacuum cleaner she used at the factory where she worked, the couple reconnects, defying a society unable to accept or tolerate unconventional relationships and behaviors. At the same time, in a battle against the status quo, Nat seeks to claim a place as a “useful ghost.” In his first feature film, Ratchapoom Boonbunchachoke presents a gritty comedy full of symbolism and sharp political and environmental critique. The film, which unravels the layers of repression (and dust) surrounding the lives of the Thai people, had its world premiere in the Critics’ Week section of the Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Grand Prize.
