MOTELX lands in the historical city of Coimbra in 2019 with an exclusive programme that will showcase the best of international and national horror for four days in the city's privileged spaces.

"Mandy", the most remarkable horror film of last year, premiered at Sundance, and marks the return of filmmaker Panos Cosmatos and features yet another memorable performance by Nicolas Cage in a critically-described film as a landmark of psychedelic terror. This unmissable session takes place on Friday, March 8 at 18h30, in the unique setting of the Antiga Igreja do Convento São Francisco.

Equally controversial is Lars von Trier's "The House That Jack Built", with Matt Dillon and the recently departed Bruno Ganz in the lead roles, that allowed von Trier to return to the Cannes festival after being considered persona non grata. This film about a serial killer marks his return to the genre after the distant "Epidemic" and most recently "Antichrist."  "The House That Jack Built" will show on Saturday, March 9 at 21h30, in the Black Box of the Convento São Francisco.

Another highlight of this programme is the long Portuguese "Mutant Blast" by Fernando Alle. After some notoriety at genre festivals with the short films "Papa Wrestling" and "Banana Motherfucker", Alle completes a long-standing project with the precious support of Lloyd Kaufmann and his Troma. With such references, a rather noisy session can be expected, as happened at the world premiere at MOTELX 2018, it will be Thursday, March 7 at 21h00, at the Black Box of the Convento São Francisco.

Portuguese cinema will also be present in two sessions of short films selected from last year's competition, interspersed with international short films. "Tell-Tale Heart" by São José Correia, "The Strange House in the Mist" by Guilherme Daniel, "Moscatro" by Patrícia Maciel, "The Fear Installation" by Ricardo Leite, "Freelancer" by Paulo A.M Oliveira and Francisco A. Lopes , "The Portrait" by Paulo Araújo and "Insanium" by Rui Pedro Sousa will be presented Saturday 9 at 15h00 and Sunday 10 at 18h00 in the Black Box of the Convento São Francisco.

Young crowds and families were not forgotten and for this we programmed two sessions of Big Bad Wolf, the children's section of MOTELX. It will be Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 at 11h30 in Casa Municipal da Cultura. Entrance is free.

The pedagogical component will also be present through a masterclass, Thursday 7 at 18h00 in Casa Municipal da Cultura, about the aesthetic and thematic origins of horror cinema. Entrance is free.
