The Virgin of the Quarry Lake

La Virgen De La Tosquera

A film by Laura Casabe

Argentina; Spain; Mexico;, 2025, 95'

In 2001, on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, Natalia, Mariela and Josefina are three inseparable friends who are all infatuated with the same boy, Diego. When the relationship between Natalia and her friend finally seems poised to become romantic, Silvia, an older and more experienced woman, enters the picture and quickly captures Diego’s attention. Consumed by jealousy, Natalia turns to her grandmother Rita, who introduces her to spells and black magic in an attempt to break the couple apart. What begins as a story of teenage romance and rivalry gradually becomes an increasingly violent horror tale, set against Argentina’s economic and social crisis of 2001. Directed by Laura Casabé and based on stories by Mariana Enríquez, The Virgin of the Quarry Lake blends coming-of-age, folk horror and social drama. It premiered at Sundance and screened at Sitges, where it won the Best Cinematography award.
