The Lie

A film by Helena Coan

New Zealand, United Kingdom, 2023, 104'

Grace Millane was a 21-year-old British tourist whose disappearance in Auckland in 2018, after meeting on Tinder, drew international attention to the case. The young woman's body was found in the Waitakere Ranges in West Auckland the following day. This documentary puts the viewer in the investigator's shoes through the use of security cameras that follow Grace's trail to the young man she met and was last seen with. Each advance in the investigation creates a sense of unease that pushes this film beyond the true crime label and into the realm of a horror film – only 100% real. The "new normal" of romantic relationships, particularly through the use of dating apps, reveals the new dangers to which women (in particular) are subject.
