The Hunger

The Hunger

A film by Tony Scott

USA, UK, 1983, 97'

In his directorial debut, Tony Scott plunges into a hypnotic erotic thriller in which David Bowie, Catherine Deneuve and Susan Sarandon form a dark triangle between vampires and humans. The film opens at London’s legendary Batcave nightclub, to the sound of Bauhaus’ “Bela Lugosi’s Dead”, and turns vampirism into a metaphor for desire, dependency and bodily decay. Met with mixed reviews at Cannes, The Hunger would later become a cult classic and a stylish time capsule of the early 1980s, particularly cherished by the goth subculture. On the brink of the AIDS era, Scott portrays immortality as a failed promise and the body as a site of anxiety and decline. For many, it remains Tony Scott’s masterpiece, and one of the defining films of his career.
