After competing for the Golden Bear at the 74th Berlinale, “The Devil’s Bath”, the latest film by Austrian duo Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala, directors of “Goodnight Mommy” and “The Lodge”, is premiering in Portugal at MOTELX. Agnes is a young newlywed who tries at any cost to adapt to the life in the fishing community of her new husband, Wolf, despite his indifference towards her. Isolated and oppressed, both by her austere mother-in-law and by the religious beliefs and social norms of her time, Anja Plaschg’s character is lost in the fog and shadows of her own mind. Based on the scholarly book “Suicide by Proxy in Early Modern Germany: Crime, Sin and Salvation”, by Kathy Stuart, this historical drama travels back to the 18th century to explore the intersection between gender, religion, and mental health.
