After the tragic death of his wife, Mit, an engineer plagued by insomnia and severe migraines, and his teenage daughter May, move into an old house in a suburban neighbourhood. While digging up the soil in the garden to build a shrine, Mit unwittingly releases a wrathful "djinn" (Arabic name for “genies”, supernatural entities associated with both good and evil), imprisoned since the founding of Bangkok 200 years earlier. When a Buddhist monk fails to calm the situation, father and daughter travel to a province in the far south of Thailand, where they seek the help of a Muslim witch doctor. The final exorcism will reveal countless secrets, both about them and about the land. Despite remaining faithful to the classic horror structure with a haunted house story, “The Cursed Land” subverts the lack of representation of the Thai Islamic community within the genre, as well as within History, by placing the enslavement of the Malay people during the formation of the capital at the heart of the narrative.
