A heavy voice narration introduces “The Angry Black Girl
and Her Monster”, the familiar sci-fi tale we’re about to
see. The voice belongs to Vicaria, a brilliant teenager,
who quickly reveals the story of how death has befallen
her family several times: her mother died after being
shot by a stray bullet when she was eight, her brother
was murdered in a street violence incident, and her
father, sooner or later, will seemingly follow the same
path due to drug addiction. Finding it difficult to accept
the loss of her brother Chris, Vicaria, who believes that
death is a disease that can be cured, decides to bring
him back to life. Inspired by Mary Shelley’s gothic novel
“Frankenstein’”, “The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster”
thematically challenges our preconceptions about life
and death, while in the process painting a portrait of the
police and systemic violence that continues to threaten
the black community in the United States. In the end, one
question lingers: who really is the Monster?
