“Do you have any idea the risks a woman like me takes whenever she decides to have a little fun?”. In the first shots of “Strange Darling”, a mysterious killer stalks a wounded woman through the forests of Oregon. She tries her best to outsmart her attacker, but as each tense moment goes by, she becomes weaker and less capable of doing so. He’s a man with a mission, and it’s only a matter of time before he captures his prey. But in “Strange Darling”, nothing is as it seems, since we are in the presence of a film that questions the roles both men and women are supposed to play in these kinds of situations (and films) in an attempt to understand the limits of consent. With an unusual narrative structure and hypnotic 35mm photography (by actor Giovanni Ribisi, who also produced this film), the two leads – Willa Fitzgerald and Kyle Gallner – shine in this cat-and-mouse game written and directed by JT Mollner.
