Geppetto has always wanted a son and, after building Pinocchio, decides to do everything in his power to turn the wooden puppet into a real child. But the famous story of growth and discovery takes a far less tender turn when Pinocchio begins to understand what it means to have a human body — and what he is willing to do to obtain one. In this new version of the classic tale, the puppet becomes a disturbing and unpredictable creature, dragging Geppetto and everyone who comes near him into a nightmare of violence and transformation. Directed by Rhys Frake-Waterfield, the filmmaker behind Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey, Pinocchio: Unstrung belongs to the universe of public-domain childhood stories reimagined as horror and relies heavily on practical effects to transform a childhood tale into something considerably less educational. Featuring Richard Brake and Robert Englund, this is Pinocchio as they never told you to read him at school.
