One Cut of the Dead

Kamera wo Tomeru na!

A film by Shinichiro Ueda

Japan, 2017, 96'

A film crew is shooting a seemingly cliché zombie film in and around an abandoned warehouse, where the military are said to have made human experiments. Then, suddenly, a real zombie enters the frame and mayhem ensues, while the director insists the camera should continue rolling. The first feature film by director Ueda starts with a relentless continuous shot, until it surprisingly changes gears bringing the concept of meta cinema to a whole new level. An ode to low-budget filmmaking, this «marvellously inventive horror-comedy [which] breathes new life into the zombie genre», according to Variety, received a five minutes standing ovation at its world premiere during the Fareast Film Festival in Udine.
