Faroe Islands, 1862. Baldur lives a solitary life as a fisherman, supporting his mother since his father’s untimely death. The arrival of Helge, a mysterious and charismatic whaler stranded on the island, changes everything. A relationship blossoms between the two men, but it must remain hidden in a community where desire for another man is seen as both a sin and a threat to the social order. When a tragedy jeopardises their life together, Baldur refuses to accept their separation and discovers that love can survive beyond death. Directed by Kasper Kalle, “No Rest for the Wicked” is a Danish folk horror that embraces the painful longings of Gothic romance in a dreamlike, singular atmosphere reminiscent of Robert Eggers’ “The Lighthouse”. Inspired by Karl Heinrich Ulrichs’ 1884 short story “Manor”, it brings together desire, vampires and religious repression in a setting as beautiful as it is inhospitable.
