Monster

A film by Patty Jenkins

USA, 2003, 109'

A victim of childhood abuse, Aileen Wuornos became a prostitute in her teens. She was determined to end her own life when she meets Selby, a young woman with whom Aileen ends up getting involved. One night, after being assaulted by a client, Aileen commits murder in self-defence, an incident that unleashes a murderous rage in her that would make her ‘the first US female serial killer’. Patty Jenkins’ debut in feature films would be marked by what Roger Ebert called «one of the greatest performances in the history of cinema». Charlize Theron’s transformation into Aileen Wuornos would earn her many acting awards, including the 2004 Best Actress Academy Award. Interest in Aileen Wuornos’ life is maintained, with the announcement of a prequel entitled “American Boogeywoman”.
