Il Demonio

Il Demonio

A film by Brunello Rondi

Italy, France, 1963, 100'

This is the story of Purificazione, a village girl who is said to be possessed by the devil. The young woman finds herself cast out by everyone, including Antonio, the man she loves. He hates her and wants to marry someone else. Purificazione is forced to leave the village where she lives and seeks refuge in a convent where the mother superior tries to instil in her the fear of, and obedience to, God. But she pays no attention, thinking only of her frustrated passion. The first film by Brunello Rondi, considered a forerunner of European folk horror after this first neo-realist horror, being also the screenwriter of films such as “8 ½” and “La Dolce Vita”. Banned in Italy for its profanity and latent sexuality, it’s difficult to tell due to the illegible handwriting of the person responsible for processing this film, but it’s believed to have been censored in Portugal for those same reasons.
