Ten years after “The Wailing” (screened at the 2016 edition of MOTELX), Na Hong-jin returns with a sci-fi epic that competed for the Palme d’Or at Cannes. In the remote South Korean village of Hope, a group of inhabitants is forced to confront a mysterious creature that emerges from the mountains, while a series of wildfires cuts off all communication with the outside world. Between police officers, hunters and bloodthirsty beasts, survival becomes an unpredictable step in a constant race against death. Featuring the unlikely pairing of the couple Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander among an eccentric ensemble of characters, “Hope” feels like the child of a marriage between “The Fast and the Furious”, “Mission: Impossible” and “Godzilla”. Horror, action, science fiction, comedy and plenty of curves wrapped up in a delirious adrenaline-fuelled spectacle.
