Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum

A film by Jung Bum-shik

South Korea, 2018, 94'

In 1979, 42 patients at the Gonjiam Psychiatric Hospital committed suicide and its director was never found. The place was left abandoned and reports of hauntings and curses soon emerged. A web series called “Horror Times” invites six people to enter the abandoned hospital and report their experiences in a live stream. The abandoned hospital to which the film refers exists in real life and was considered by CNN in 2012 to be «one of the most chilling places in the world». The film was followed by some controversy, with court proceedings brought on by the owners of the building and some of the actors abandoning their film career shortly afterwards with no explanation. Factors that will have contributed to its success in South Korea, becoming the second most profitable horror film ever, following “The Tale of Two Sisters”
