In a high-security prison, violence is part of everyday life: the inmates face constant oppression from the guards and the tyrannical warden, gang warfare and a system where justice has been left outside the walls. Everything changes when a new prisoner arrives and a series of increasingly horrifying deaths begins. An impossible explanation soon emerges: a ghost is killing those who carry the most negative aura. To survive, the prisoners are forced to do what seems hardest in that place – perform good deeds and maintain positive energy. Between fights, dancing, prayers and Kierkegaard invocations, this Indonesian horror comedy shifts with delirious precision between absurdity and graphic brutality. Directed by Joko Anwar, a master of Indonesian genre cinema, his 12th feature is an irreverent supernatural satire with references to labour exploitation and environmental destruction.
