Ganja & Hess

Ganja & Hess

A film by Bill Gunn

USA, 1973, 110'

The only film directed by actor and playwright Bill Nunn with Duane Jones (Ben from “Night of the Living Dead”) in the role of Dr Hess Green, an anthropologist, who after being stabbed with an ancestral blade, develops an insatiable thirst for blood. Although the film was produced as a Blaxploitation film, the end result is more of an essay on the idea of erasing a cultural identity. Winner of the Cannes Critics Week, it was cut into a shorter version in the absence of Bill Gunn and premiered under the title "Blood Couple". Gunn's original vision has almost disappeared and is currently revered by directors like Spike Lee who remade it in 2014 with the title “Da Sweet Blood of Jesus”.
