First Love

First Love

A film by Takashi Miike

Japan, 2019, 108'

Shortly after receiving seriously bad news from his doctor, Young boxer Leo crosses paths with Monica, a drug-addicted call girl forced to work for the Yakuza to pay her father’s debt. To make matters worse, during the course of one night the two will have to fight for their lives against a Chinese triad, corrupt cops, and assassins. Takashi Miike, the prolific Japanese film director and one of the most notorious genre film festival favourites since the mid-1990s, returns to the over-the-top style that made him famous, with an explosive mix of drugs, blood and gore, dark humour, and - of course - love. This is, apparently, the director’s 103rd feature film, having had its world premiere at the Director’s Fortnight of the Cannes Film Festival.
